Plans to hold a family gala day to replace the defunct Maryport Carnival are being mooted.

A group, led by town councillor Lee Williamson, are looking for help to hold a static carnival and more on the harbourside on July 9.

The event is in the early planning stages but at a meeting on Tuesday, a group of about 12 people discussed it.

They are looking at having acts like dance groups, a brass band and fairground.

Local businesses could be given the opportunity to take part.

The group is now calling for others to join.

Membership is £2 and would give people the chance to have a say about the day and take part in the event.

They also want volunteers for the day and people willing to help fund-raise.

Nicola Woolley, of the Extended Schools Partnership, said she would circulate information to all the schools in the Maryport area asking for suggestions and looking at how children can be involved.

One idea was that youth organisations be invited to compete against each other in various activities.

County councillor Keith Little said the static carnival or gala day could use council-owned land for free.

Allerdale's chief executive, Ian Frost, also offered support.

Anyone wanting to join the carnival group can obtain forms from Lisa Douglas and Paul Bramley at the town hall in Senhouse Street or email secretary Tom Todd at maryportcommunitycarnival@gmail.com
