A picture by an amateur photographer from High Harrington will adorn walls of homes across Cumbria and the North East next year after being selected for a charity calendar.

Gary McKeating's picture of the St Bees RNLI lifeboat passing Harrington shore was selected to appear in BBC Look North's 2016 weather calendar, which raises money for Children in Need.

The calendar shows some of the best photos submitted as a backdrop for the news programme's weather forecast.

Gary, 46, of Beckside, is stakeholder relations director for Areva UK.

As a keen amateur photographer, he spends a lot of time capturing sunsets on Harrington shore.

He said: "In early September I was on the shore and disappointed that there was unlikely to be a sunset as the cloud was so low.

"The sea was flat calm and as it was such a pleasant evening I decided to stay just to get some fresh air.

"Suddenly the sun appeared as an orange ball of fire below the clouds and then the St Bees RNLI lifeboat appeared from the south.

"I quickly got my camera out and snapped away as the boat moved across the sun."

Gary later shared the picture on social network Twitter and BBC Look North asked him to email it to use on the weather forecast.

Last month he was told it had been chosen as the photograph of the month and would appear in the calendar.

Gary was given a large print of the picture to keep.

He has arranged to present it to the St Bees lifeboat station to be displayed on the mess wall.

The calendar is £6 and is available online at www.looknorthcalendar.co.uk and by calling 0333 2001850.
