Four West Cumbrian amateur dramatic groups are gearing up to entertain Workington at Paint the Town Red next week.

The festival on June 4 will bring a variety of entertainment and the four groups are due to perform at The Hub.

Theatre Royal’s Second Star Youth Theatre will perform scenes from their upcoming production The Adventures of Pinocchio at noon.

Director Millie Hardy-Sims said: “We are really excited to have been asked to perform for Paint the Town Red. I think it’s so important, especially for youth theatres, to have the opportunity to show what they are capable of.

“We have been rehearsing since March and the young actors feel confident in their roles and the play.”

Over 20 students of Sing Stars Singing School will perform from 1pm to 1.30pm. The group, with members aged between four and 74, will sing tunes from a recent charity album they recorded to raise money for breast cancer. Beth McGarry, who leads the school, said: “We will be singing pop, rock, acoustic and some musical theatre. We are very excited about it as we get to showcase our talent. We have also rehearsed the song Red by Daniel Merriweather especially for the event.”

Razzmatazz Theatre Schools will be performing 2pm to 2.30pm. The 30 performers, aged between four and 12, will bring a mixture of songs and dances to the town.

School principal, Charlotte Young, said: “For some of the students this will be their first time performing. It’s an opportunity to showcase what amazing talent we have in West Cumbria and it’s such a confidence boost for our students.”

Workington and District Amateur Musical Society will bring their new production of High School Musical to The Hub between 3pm and 3.30pm.

The 40 cast members, aged between seven and 20, are hoping the public will sing and dance along with them.

Abbie-Louise Johnsen, of the group, said: “We want to show to the public just how professional an amateur show can be, especially from a junior group. We hope to see everyone singing and dancing along.”
