A two-year-old Dearham girl, who has leukaemia, could enjoy a dream trip to America thanks to the kindness of her community.

Debbie McGee, 52, of Allonby, is raising money to send granddaughter Hollie to Disney World, Florida, with her parents Kelly Marie McGee and Colin Hodgson. Hollie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in September, the day her mum turned 30.

Debbie said: “Kelly took Hollie to hospital with three spots on her face, it must have been a mother’s instinct. It was devastating to find out she had leukaemia, I never thought something like this could happen to us.”

Debbie set a target of £3,000 to fund Hollie’s trip and has already raised over £1,200.

She said: “It’s absolutely overwhelming, I didn’t think we’d get so much support. What a community we have, it keeps your spirit up knowing that everyone is behind you.

“I set up the page because Hollie and her parents are having a really tough time, they’re at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, every week and it’s upsetting.”

Hollie has two sisters, Katlyn and Kayla, and a brother, Ryan.

Debbie said: “Hollie hasn’t been able to have treatment for the past four weeks because her immune system has been too low.

“She always used to run around and was really active, but with the treatment she stopped walking and lost all her confidence. Now she hasn’t had any for a while she’s crawling and learning to walk again.

“A lot of things have changed since Hollie has been diagnosed but her mum and dad really support her and each other.”
