GIRL guide units from Cockermouth and the surrounding areas will take part in a bridge challenge tomorrow to raise funds for Cumbria Community Foundation's Flood Recovery Appeal.

Leaders of 1st Brigham Rainbows have organised the fund-raising challenge and around 240 girls from the 16 units within Rainbows, Brownies, Guide and senior sections have been invited to take part with their families.

They will walk through the affected Cocker and Derwent river courses and crisscross over eight foot and road bridges which were affected by the December flooding.

The girls will pay to take part in the event and will receive a stamp at each bridge they go over.

If they collect all eight stamps they will be awarded with a badge which has been especially made.

If some of bridges are still not open, the girls will still receive a stamp for walking near it.

Siobhan Gascoigne, one of the guiding leaders, said: "After all the flooding I went for the walk and four of the eight bridges were closed.

"This seemed very poignant and made me think that possibly the walk could be used in a different way.

"If we can enjoy the challenge but also raise funds for the flood appeal that would be brilliant!"

The Cumbria Flood Recovery Appeal was set up on Saturday 5 December 2015 as Storm Desmond hit the county and has raised £6 million.

The three-mile walk will start at 10.30am from Harris Park in Cockermouth.
