Blind and partially sighted people from across West Cumbria will receive help on how to access medical information at a free event next week.

Cockermouth Blind Club has teamed up with the Royal National Institute of Blind People to hold the event on Thursday, September 1.

A RNIB representative will attend the meeting and people who attend will be able to choose how they receive communications from health and social care providers.

All health and social care providers now must provide medical information in a format that blind or partially sighted people can access including emails, large type letters, Braille and audio.

Cockermouth Blind Club has been running for 20 years and has about 20 members.

Edward Bebbington, of the group, said: "People can be unable to find out what their doctors are saying to them and when their appointments are.

"They might get a letter, but when a friend or relative comes and reads it the date might have gone.

"It's great to have someone visiting from the RNIB who is from the national team and explaining how we can be helped locally."

The meeting will take place at Lorton Street Methodist Church in Cockermouth from 10am.
