A call has gone out for shoppers to help a disabled charity’s dream come true by sprucing up its garden.

Allerdale COSC needs the public’s support to obtain £12,000 from Tesco to make the outdoor area of its Maryport base a safe place for its members.

The area at the back of its Park Hill property is overgrown and has a steep path which those in a wheelchair can not access.

The money will be used to build a ramp and patio areas, as well as making a poetry garden, as part of the Beyond The Gates project.

Members of the centre are proud of their pottery work and centre manager Alan Hunter said it would mean a great deal to them if they were able to place their creations outside.

Mr Hunter said: “We have got a lot of land which is inaccessible for our members in wheelchairs and those who struggle to walk.

“It will support their well-being by making them healthier and happier in a safe environment.”

Other projects in with a chance of winning are Workington’s Westfield Primary School and Learning Through Landscapes.

Shoppers can vote as part of Tesco’s Bags of Help initiative by being given a token when they shop at the Workington store.

The project which receives the most support wins £12,000, the second gets £10,000 and the third £8,000.

Voting starts on October 31 and ends on November 13.
