An inquest is set to be opened next week into the death of a man who died while cycling in the Lake District.

Dr Simon Newell died on August 10 at Newlands Pass near Buttermere.

It is believed the 59-year-old, who was preparing to retire to Cumbria, fell off his bike.

Dr Newell was a consultant paediatrician with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and had five weeks left to work.

He and his wife Debra were preparing to move to Braithwaite.

He had been a regular visitor to the county for 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, three children aged 26, 30 and 31 and a baby granddaughter.

In a statement after his death, they said: "Simon loved Cumbria and had been going there to enjoy the mountains for over 30 years."

Dr Newell was an established and respected expert witness, who had been called to testify at the Royal Courts of Justice numerous times.

He was also a trustee for the children’s charity Sparks and spoke regularly at fundraising events.

He was also a former vice president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

A tribute on the college website said: "For many of us Simon was much more than a former vice president for training.

"He was our colleague and friend, and he will be greatly missed."

The inquest is due to be opened and adjourned on Wednesday.
