A Workington man has received royal recognition by way of a letter and card from the Queen.

John Hastings, 43, of Mossbay Road, wrote a poem called Happy Birthday Ma’am for the monarch’s 90th birthday earlier this year.

He sent it and some other royal-themed poems to Buckingham Palace and recently received a reply.

His letter came from Balmoral Castle and was signed by Mary Morrison, lady-in-waiting, and the Queen’s chief letter writer.

John also sent poems about the births of Prince George and Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, Prince Charles’ visit to Workington, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the wedding of William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

He said: “I was blown away when I received it.”

John has been writing poems for eight years and has had several of his works published in anthologies.

He regularly reads his poems at town events and will perform at Workington’s Christmas lights switch-on later this year.
