Sixty-five people enjoyed afternoon tea at Cockermouth's Kirkgate Centre to celebrate its 20th birthday.

A 1920s style tea party was laid on at the weekend and raised more than £750 which will go towards the centre's redevelopment project.

Volunteers from the Friends of Kirkgate prepared and hosted a table each, using vintage crockery supplied by Wilde and Romantic, of Cockermouth.

Katie Barrie, marketing manager, said: "It was lovely and all looked so beautiful, so many people said how much they enjoyed it.

"Each of the volunteers was in charge of one table, preparing sandwiches, scones and cakes for eight to 10 people.

"There was music from the Papcastle Quintet and a raffle."

Birthday celebrations will continue next month with a Roaring 20s Fund-raising Ball on Friday, October 16, at Hunday Manor Hotel, Winscales.

Tickets cost £35 or £300 for a table of 10, available from the Kirkgate Centre and Billy Bowman Music in Lowther Went.
