A youngster battling cancer is back to his "cheeky self" after undergoing a major operation to remove a tumour from his right kidney.

Three-year-old Logan Waite, from Aspatria, is recovering in Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) following the surgery last Friday.

He was diagnosed with a tumour in October and over the last few weeks has endured a gruelling schedule of chemotherapy.

The next stage of his battle was last week's operation in Newcastle, which has went well according to Logan's mum Kerry, 28.

She said: "As far as we know it was a success. They said it went well but we don't know what the next stage is yet.

"He is doing really well they are really happy with how he's getting on.

"He hasn't really complained about any pain much, he's back to his cheeky self.

"The staff at the RVI have been fantastic."

At the moment Kerry and husband Jon have no firm timescale as to when they can bring Logan back home but doctors have said he will still need treatment for about nine months.

Logan is the middle child in the family - with big brother Harley, six, and sister Lacie, who is 19 months.

The youngster's plight captured the imagination of his local community who have since clubbed together to raise money for a fund called Logan's Journey.

In just 10 days an online appeal on website Just Giving collected more than £3,000, with that fund now standing around the £4,000 mark.

That money will be donated to the RVI as a thanks for the treatment given to Logan.

However, since then kind-hearted members of the community have continued their fundraising exploits and set up a fund to support Logan's family.

At the moment the biggest chunk of the £2,000 raised has come from the efforts of the Black Bull in Cockermouth.

The money will be used to take Logan on days out while he is recovering and the family will use any left over money to take him and his siblings to Florida as a treat after everything they've been through.

In another fundraising bid Wigton boxing coach Andi Crossman is coming out of retirement to compete in a charity match against his brother, with the proceeds going to Logan's fund.
