A man has died after a car crash near Keswick. 

A Toyota driven by an 82-year-old man, of Braithwaite, near Keswick and a Volkswagen Bora, driven by  24-year-old man, were in collision at around 4.45pm on Friday on the A66 at Braithwaite.

Both were cut free by firefighters before being taken away in two air ambulances.

One was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital, the other to Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle.

The road in between Braithwaite and Portinscale was closed for several hours and diversions were in place.

The 24-year-old man was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital with serious injuries and the 82-year-old man was taken by a second air ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, also with serious injuries.

The 82-year-old man died on Sunday.

Police are appealing for any witnesses that may have been in the Braithwaite area around the time of the collision who may have seen either vehicles involved in the incident.

Police would also ask that anyone who has a dash cam fitted to check any recordings as this may assist with the investigation.
