A lorry driver’s death was “possibly” down to a sex game which went wrong, an inquest heard.

David Gordon Towers, 57, of Silloth, was found dead by his neighbour at Tanglewood Caravan Park last September.

Mr Towers, who worked for Eric Nicholson Transport in Cockermouth, had separated from his wife Sylvia seven years ago but the pair had remained good friends.

Mrs Towers, who lives in Keswick, said she believed her husband had been taking part in a sex game when he lost his life.

“What happened that night is something he has gone and done and it’s backfired on him,” she said.

She called her husband a “gentle gentleman” who doted on his children.

His neighbour, John Latham, told the inquest he went round to Mr Towers’ caravan just after 9am on September 20 and found him lying on the steps.

Mr Towers, who was a member of Keswick Freemasons, worked as a painter and decorator at Sellafield between 1980 and 2000.

He then went self-employed, before working at Nicholsons in 2007.

Area coroner Kally Cheema concluded a narrative result at the hearing.

He said Mr Towers had been found hanged, possibly due to autoerotic asphyxiation, a sex game which involves the restriction of air.
