Record-breaking runner Gary McKee received a seal of approval from Copeland councillors as tributes poured in.

Councillors backed plans to give Cleator Moor’s marathon man the Freedom of the Borough – the highest accolade the council can hand out - at an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday.

A ceremony will be arranged to celebrate Mr McKee’s achievements, including his world-record 100 marathons in 100 days, for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Over the years, the 47-year-old runner has raised more than £300,000 for the charity with a range of endurance feats.

Speaking at the meeting, Copeland mayor Mike Starkie said: “Gary’s marathon challenge brought positive international exposure for Cleator Moor and Copeland, and he was inundated with messages of support from all over the world.

“He has proved to be an inspiration, and is always joined by a large number of supporters for sections of his fundraising runs.”

Hugh Branney, who represents Cleator Moor North on the council, said: “What a role model for Cleator Moor and Copeland.”

Mr McKee started fundraising for the charity in memory of his late father Victor, who was diagnosed with lung cancer 20 years ago and died in 2003 from an unrelated illness.

Gary also had a real ale created in his honour by Ennerdale Brewery, called Marathon Man.
