A Maryport carer is hoping to take part in the glamorous Miss England beauty contest.

Amy Johnston, of Buttermere Road, has qualified for the semi-finals of a competition which could lead to her being eligible for Miss England.

The 21-year-old was one of 20 girls chosen from hundreds of entries to take part in the Miss North West competition – a direct heat into the national event.

She was chosen to represent Cumbria after entering online.

The Miss North West event was on Sunday where she came fourth, appearing as Miss Cumbria West.

Amy, who works at Riverside Court Care Home, as well as caring for her pet snake, dog, cat and fish in her spare time, said: “We had to do a bikini walk then in cocktail dress and evening gown. My marks were close to getting third place.”

Amy said the floor had been quite slippery. “I was nervous. I lost some marks off my walk.”

The contestants in the top three qualified for the national finals. By coming fourth, Amy gets to compete in the semi-finals which are held in Liverpool in July.

She needs to be placed in that competition to get to the finals.

In the meantime, she said her partner Kara Scott’s royal python is being nursed back to health after a serious respiratory infection and there is a dog to walk, a cat to care for and a fish tank to clean out!
