This week Linda Radcliffe met the Gibsons, whose 20-month old son, Jack, has leukaemia.
The diagnosis came in April, on the same day as Sam and Andrew Gibson, Jack, and daughter Amelia, four, were to hold a housewarming party to celebrate getting back into their home after it was flooded in December.
Sam and Andrew, of Andersons Court, Flimby, cancelled the party.
While in the Royal Victoria Infirmary, they saw posters for an event raising money for childhood cancer and decided to help.
The family has since raised money for Clic Sergeant, a cancer charity for children and young people.
Councillor Radcliffe said she was proud to support them.
She added: “I read their story and was touched by the way that, despite what they are going through and all the personal cost entailed with weekly or more trips to Newcastle, they have thought of others.”
