A housing developer has met with planning officers over options for a Workington play area.

Representatives from Persimmon Homes met with Allerdale planning officers last week to discuss the provision of a play area at Forgehill Park.

The developer built the 92-home Forgehill Park off Mossbay Road and was told to build a play area as part of the planning conditions.

It did not build the playground and it has applied to Allerdale council to remove it.

A council spokesman said: "Council planning officers met with representatives from Persimmon to emphasise again that we expect them to fulfil the requirements of the planning consent which has been granted, and discuss their options for providing play provision on this site.

"We are waiting for them to come back to us with a proposal."

Persimmon's proposal not to build the play area sparked over 40 letters of objection during a council consultation.

Lynda Coid, operations manager at Westfield Housing Association, said: "The association owns 13 houses at Forgehill Park and has, for some time, been asking Persimmon about the proposed play area.

"Over the last couple of years we have had complaints from both our tenants and owner/occupiers about children playing on the road on bicycles and playing football.

"The complaints are mainly for the children's safety, but also that footballs are causing damage to both vehicles and property.

"Children have to play somewhere."

The planning application for the housing development required Persimmon to submit details of the play equipment before work started.

It also said the play area would have to be installed before the 80th house was occupied.

Allerdale council said enforcement action could be taken over the breach.
