A mother hopes her expertise will provide new support for people with autism and their families.

Amanda Denwood is launching Autism Support Cumbria after 21 years working as a teacher and providing pastoral care for pupils at Stainburn School in Workington.

Mrs Denwood, of Cockermouth, has a child on the autism spectrum.

She says Autism Support Cumbria will provide bespoke family support, one-to-one help, advocacy, consultancy, and academic tuition.

She also wants to provide training and advice to businesses and employers on autism and how they can better support employees.

Mrs Denwood, who is studying for a post graduate qualification in working with people on the autism spectrum, said: "I know from personal experience how difficult day-to-day tasks can be for someone who is autistic.

"Managing socially, managing themselves and being bombarded with everyday situations can be overwhelming for anyone on the spectrum.

"The sound of hand-driers, the feel of clothing, walking into a crowded room, meeting new people, being asked to perform more than one task at a time - they can all cause difficulties, whether or not they have learning needs, are high-functioning or even a savant."

Mrs Denwood also wants to raise awareness about autism, including Asperger’s Syndrome.

She said: "Autism is a spectrum so everyone on it is different and how individuals perform is unique to them.

"A strategy used for one person may not work with another. By working as Autism Support Cumbria, I will be able to meet my own children’s needs.

"I can also help other adults and children to fulfil their potential and make the challenges of living with autism more manageable.

"Raising awareness of the needs of people living with autism will also make their lives, and the lives of their families, easier."

Mrs Denwood is also a recently-appointed member of ICAAN - the Independent Community Autism Activity Network.

It is a local group of volunteers who organise activities for people with autism and their families across Allerdale and Copeland.
