A new mayor has been chosen for Workington.

Councillor Joan Wright was unanimously elected by fellow councillors for the role at a ceremony at the Carnegie Theatre on Wednesday night.

Coun Wright was deputy mayor for the 2015-16 year and has now taken over from Councillor Carole Armstrong.

Coun Wright is a stalwart of Workington Town Council and has served as deputy chair and on all of its committees.

She also served on Allerdale council and represented the Moorclose ward until last year.

She said: "I'm here to promote Workington and I hope that you have a good year.

"Myself and the mayoress will do our best to promote our town and we look forward to attending many functions.

"Thank you for the support and trust."

The new mayor announced that her chosen charity would be Myeloma UK.

Councillor Ann Bales is the new deputy mayor and Denise Roper is the new mayoress.

Coun Armstrong said: "It has been an honour and a privilege to represent this wonderful town and to spend time through the year with different organisations.

"I wish her and her mayoress all the best for the year to come."

The ceremony also acted as the annual general meeting for the town council.

Nominations for committee membership and chair of the policy and resources, finance, property and employment, environment, culture, allotments and planning committees were also put forward.
