Work has been completed to solve issues with flooding at a Workington football pitch.

Drainage work and reseeding of the pitch, near St Gregory’s School, Moorclose, was completed last week.

Stephen Stoddart, secretary of Moorclose Residents’ Group, approached Allerdale council to ask for the work to be carried out.

Mr Stoddart, who also represents the area on the town and district council, said: “It’s great that the kids in Moorclose now have a better football pitch to play on. The residents’ group have been working hard for this and I’m happy that once again we were able to work with the council to improve our area.”

He added that this was even more important as the leisure centre on Newlands Lane is due to close this summer and children need somewhere to exercise and play locally.

Allerdale council spent £2,500 on the improvement work.

A spokesman for the council said: “The council is committed through the council plan to improving health and well-being through improved access to quality leisure activities and facilities. We are making improvements to our pitches across the borough through improved maintenance as a result of the playing pitch strategy.

“Coun Stoddart approached the council to say that there was a club which potentially could use the area for football training and it was also identified as a site which could be levelled for use for more organised games.”
