A fund-raising concert, held to raise cash to restore a Workington church organ, collected around £1,000.

Organisers of Summer Serenade, which featured opera singers and local performers, said the money will go towards the organ at Our Lady and St Michael's Church, in Bank Road.

Soprano Kathryn McGuckin Stevens performed alongside her brother Anthony, accompanied by organist Arwel Price.

Flimby Male Voice Choir sang and author and poet David King also gave two recitals.

The concert was organised to help pay for the Harrison organ, one of the oldest in the north of England, which is in need of repairs that could cost between £30,000 and £50,000.

Organiser Mr McGuckin, who is also an Allerdale councillor,, said: "It was wonderful to see such support for the music event from people of all ages and those who performed and helped during the show.

"The organ has such a long history with Workington. It was consecrated in 1906, and we hope more sponsors from the business community, political bodies and the arts will donate.

"An appeal will also be made to the Carnegie Trust as it was a gift from Andrew Carnegie himself that began the original fund for its installation."
