Almost 600 boxes of festive goodies will be sent to service men and women overseas from West Cumbria.

Ryan Winthrop, Support our Soldiers co-ordinator, said he had a target of 400 Christmas boxes but with the huge support he has received he had been given many more.

He said: "I can't thank people enough. Ewanrigg Junior School PTA and staff alone packed half those boxes and Flimby Primary School gave us between 50 and 60.

"People have organised events for us and individuals have given us items to add to the boxes. We are so grateful for each and every one."

This year at least 100 boxes will go to the Falklands.

Ryan said: "I am pleased to do that because I know there are a few local lads in the Falklands including some from Workington."

Mr Winthrop said the 540 boxes have been sent and he would start collecting gifts in January.

He added as long as there were soldiers, sailors or airmen and women serving overseas, Support our Soldiers would continue to send them gifts to make them know they are appreciated at home.
