A parade to congratulate Maryport’s own Paralympian will take place this morning.

Simon Lawson, who finished 14th in the men’s T54 marathon in Rio, will follow a route from St Mary’s Church grounds, onto Curzon Street and up Senhouse Street to the town hall, starting at 10.30am.

Schools and community groups have been invited by Maryport Town Council to line the streets, wave flags and cheer the local athlete.

The wheelchair racer finished the Rio marathon in exhausting heat with nothing to drink after his water pack broke during the warm-up.

Cumbria’s only representative at the Paralympics, Simon, a former British championship rider, was involved in a motorbike accident which left him paralysed from the chest down.

He sustained serious injuries in the crash while practising in July 2001.

He only turned to athletics in 2010.

When it was confirmed he would take part in the Rio games, people rallied around to support him with the costs of participating.

People are asked to avoid parking on Senhouse Street between 9.30am and 11am to prevent obstructing the view during the parade.
