A team of helpers have taken up paintbrushes, litterpickers and gardening equipment to transform Workington's harbourside.

Allerdale council's streetscene team is leading the two-day project at Town Quay with help from Workington Town Council staff, Mind in West Cumbria, the Workington branch of the national group Conversation Volunteers and members of the public.

The 20-strong group have been picking up litter from the shoreline, painting seats, railings and capstans and gardening.

The streetscene team leads clean-up projects in the key areas across Allerdale's towns every year.

Bob Henderson, of the team, said: "We identified this area last year as an area needing improvement.

"It won't just be a one-hit wonder. We want to keep it nice for the future and the residents."

The clean-up is also part of the efforts of Workington In Bloom.

Workington Town Council clerk Chris Bagshaw and Allerdale council's town centre manager Toni Magean both helped on the day.

Dr Brian Campbell, chair of Mind in West Cumbria, said: "It's an opportunity for us to show our appreciation for what many people do for us.

"It's helpful to our members to take part in community events."

The helpers were treated to a lunch and refreshments by Workington town council.

Steve Fowler, 56, of Town Quay, was among the volunteers.

He said: "It's important to maintain the harbourside. People will want this area to be kept nice and it's nice that people have turned up."

The clean-up will continue tomorrow from 10am to 3pm.

Volunteers can turn up on the day and refreshments will be provided.
