A petition has been launched to stop the Maryport to Silloth road from being closed unnecessarily.

Bill James, of Bank Mill Nurseries at Mawbray, has launched the petition to save his business and others along the Solway coast.

Mr James said the almost constant closure of the B5300 due to flooding caused by high tides and the length of time it took the county council to reopen the road was a big headache.

Electronic signs have been placed at either end of the B5300 warning motorists when the road is closed. But there have been several instances over the winter when the signs were not knocked off once the road was clear.

More than 250 people have signed the petition, available at change.org to sign.

Hard copies are available around Silloth and Allonby.

The county council is looking at installing cameras so that it can observe what is happening at the main flooding area at Dubmill Point and can act more quickly to close and open the road.
