There are some things that just warm the heart and, for me, one of those things is seeing a group of children giving their all on stage and really enjoying it.

Workington and District Amateur Musical Society’s Next Generation production of Disney’s High School Musical: On Stage certainly created that.

From the leading actors to the tiniest members taking their first steps into life on the stage, joy and enthusiasm shone through the cast throughout the show, which opened at the Carnegie Theatre in Workington on Wednesday.

There were heartrending numbers from Andrew McMinn and Hannah McLean as the show’s stars Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez.

Georgia Hunter was scarily convincing as drama queen Sharpay Evans, while Josh Pattison gave a great comic performance as Sharpay’s twin brother Ryan.

There was more comedy afoot from Sarah Deans as the clumsy but talented musician Kelsi Neilson, while every member of the cast brought their own sparkle to the show, demonstrating that they really were all in it together.

Among the cast as through the storyline, teamwork was the name of the game and the whole team worked wonders to create a fabulous show that sometimes made you forget you were watching a junior production.

The highlights were too numerous to mention in a show packed with a great mix of fun and laughter.

Wadams’ Next Generation members certainly don’t stick to the status quo when there are new challenges to take on and long may they continue.

High School Musical: On Stage runs at the Carnegie Theatre in Workington until Saturday.
