A primary school teacher turned pro mountain biker hopes to inspire women to explore the Lake District on two wheels.

Rachel Simpson, 28, of Keswick, only started mountain biking three years ago but was named Scottish Downhill Series Champion last year and claimed the top spot for senior women in the British Cycling national rankings.

She is keen to encourage riders of all ability levels to enjoy the sport and has launched a programme, Lake District Lasses, to get people onto the fells.

Rachel, who teaches year one pupils at Caldew Lea Primary School in Carlisle, said: "I'm overwhelmed already by the support I have received both from my sponsors and other female riders.

"Mountain biking is a male-dominated sport with a steadily growing female following and I want to facilitate that growth in what I believe is one of the best areas in the country.

"Having the launch party alongside the Cyclewise annual demo weekend also means that ladies who usually ride with their partner or male friends can bring them along too.

"It's going to be a great weekend."

The Lake District Lasses programme will involve building confidence and developing bike handling and navigational skills.

The programme will start with a launch party at Whinlatter on the weekend of May 21 and 22.

Free skill workshops, mechanical advice and social rides will be on offer courtesy of Rachel's sponsor, Cyclewise.

Bell Bike Helmets, who also sponsor Rachel, will also provide goodie bags to every rider who books in advance and helmets as prizes over the weekend.
