Residents flooded out of a Cockermouth block of flats in December are preparing to return home next week.

The 12 ground-floor flats at Bridge End Court were gutted by Storm Desmond. One resident moved back in this week and others are expected to move in next week.

The tenants have been in temporary accommodation since the floods, either in flats provided by their landlord Home Group or staying with family.

Work has now been completed to repair the electrics and plastering in the flats. New kitchens have been installed.

The £3 million three-storey development off Gote Road opened in April 2012 to replace Manor Court, which Home Group declared had become substandard. It has 38 flats for the over-55s.

A Home Group spokesman said: “When the floods hit Bridge End Court we worked closely with residents to support them and find those who were living on the ground floor alternative accommodation. Residents on the first and second floors were happy to remain in their homes while we carried out work on the ground floor.

“Of the 12 residents living on the ground floor, 10 are due to return in the next couple of weeks with the first arriving this week. We’ve carried out work to replaster homes and communal areas such as hallways and a residents’ meeting room.”
