THE events of November 2009 did not put Trevor and Ros Earthy off moving to Cockermouth and the couple had no regrets following the weekend's downpours.

The couple moved to Waterloo Street - one of the streets worse affected by the floods - after improved flood defences were installed between the street and the River Derwent.

Having contacted the Environment Agency, they were told told the flood risk was now negligible, enabling them to secure home insurance with no flooding excess.

While the water spilled onto its banks and into Memorial Gardens over the weekend, it did not go beyond the flood defences.

It does not mean the couple have not taken precautions.

After neighbours told them there was a history of water rising from the ground and flooding back gardens along the street, Mr and Mrs Earthy invested in a flood gate for their back door.

They believe the foundations of the new flood defences should reduce or remove that problem but they put the flood gate in place this weekend for added security.

While the couple did not fear the weekend's weather, the same was not the case for other residents of the street.

Mr Earthy said: "The neighbours have been concerned. They saw it coming down main street and down here in 2009.

"We wouldn't have bought this house if it wasn't for the flood defences here and up on Rubbybanks Road."
