It was all change in Keswick as the town's mayor and deputy mayor swapped roles.

Existing deputy mayor Susan Leighton was unanimously elected mayor of Keswick by colleagues.

Following her appointment, outgoing mayor David Burn was elected to the role of deputy mayor, a post he took on two years ago before his term of office last year.

It is Councillor Leighton's first term as mayor.

She selected mental health charity Mind's branches in West Cumbria and in Carlisle and Eden as the cause she would raise money for during the year.

Coun Leighton, of Ratcliffe Place, said: "Mental health is a very current concern.

"Those who have ever suffered depression of any severity will know how debilitating that can be. The more this is talked about the more help can be forthcoming."

She invited anyone with ideas for fundraising projects to come forward.

Collecting tins for the charity will be kept at the town hall.

As she took office, Coun Leighton took the opportunity to pay tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh, who is stepping down from public duties in the autumn, and called on the council to record a vote of thanks for his decades of service.
