The Bible has been written, illustrated, recorded and translated – but in Dearham it is also being knitted.

St Mungo’s Church member, Rose Lewis, 66, has been knitting Bible stories since October and next week they will be on display as part of a windows festival.

Each window in the grade one listed church contains a Bible scene, including the Last Supper, the loaves and fishes, Jesus walking on water and David and Goliath.

Rose has knitted dozens of pieces, including Noah’s ark.

She also has a display of 99 sheep in the church foyer.

Jesus explained how the shepherd left his 99 sheep to find the one who had gone astray – and one of the challenges for the public is to find that lost little lamb.

“I was inspired to try and knit an ark for a new great- grandson after a group of us from here went to Longtown to see a travelling exhibition of a knitted Bible.

“That was in September. I started knitting in October and have just kept going,” she said.

She said she reads the Bible daily and gets inspiration from that and the world around her.

St Mungo’s Windows Festival will be held next Saturday, July 23 from 10am to 4pm and on Sunday July 24 from noon to 4pm followed by a service of praise at 4.30pm.

As well as the Bible figures there will be floral displays.

Entry is free and refreshments and guide brochures are available for £1 each. All donations will go to church funds.
