A Cockermouth woman is striding out - with an MP and mayor in tow - to raise funds for flood victims.

Sarah Hayton, 47, lives in Brigham Road and works at the Lakes and Dales Co-op in Keswick.

She has seen first hand the devastating effects of the floods on so many people and is keen to help.

She said: "My sister, Patricia, and I both work at the Co-op and live with our mum, Elsie. We were at work when the floods hit and were anxious to get home to our 88-year-old mum who was on her own."

They set off out of town as the flood waters rose but discovered the usual route home had been blocked by a landslide.

They were turned back by police and ended up going over Whinlatter.

Sarah will be walking the same 28-mile route on Monday, setting off from town with Workington MP Sue Hayman. At Keswick she will be met by mayor Paul Titley, who will accompany her part of the way home.

She added: "I have worked in Keswick for 19 years and know so many people who have been affected by the floods.

"I went round the town streets shortly after and saw all the devastation. There were a few tears, it was like a bereavement.

"I just want to give something back and am delighted that local diginitaries have agreed to support me."

She will be carrying a collection tin en route and is relaxed about her lack of training. "They have gone through more pain than me, that will keep me going," said Sarah.
