Generous Workington children have been busy raising money for the Times & Star’s Lifeboat Appeal.

The youngsters of St Patrick’s Primary School, in Workington, have raised £167.10 towards the cost of the new Shannon class lifeboat which is expected to be delivered to the Workington RNLI station early next year.

The industrious young fundraisers raised the money by selling orange RNLI wristbands to their fellow pupils during break times at the school.

Nathan Canfield and Luke Glynn gave up their lunch and breaktimes for two weeks to sell the wristbands.

To celebrate raising the money, the school held an assembly and two RNLI crew members came down to say thank you for the school’s effort. Workington RNLI also sent a letter of thanks to all the school’s children.

Headteacher Sheryl Slack said: “It is important that our children support the local community. We have taught them about how essential the local RNLI is and what the crew do for our community.

“The children have really taken this on board and have taken the responsibility of selling the wristbands.”

Workington RNLI Lifeboat operations manager Tim Chittenden said: “We are very pleased by the initiative they have shown, for the funds they have raised and for increasing awareness in the school about our fundraising campaign to purchase the new lifeboat.”
