Paralympic star Simon Lawson will return home to a hero’s welcome next week.

People are being urged to line the streets of Maryport on Friday, September 30 to congratulate the 33-year-old wheelchair racer who finished 14th in the men’s T54 marathon in Rio.

The town council has organised the event, and clerk Lisa Douglas is hoping for a spectacular turnout.

“Simon was the only Cumbrian at the Paralympics and we need to celebrate that,” she said.

“Everyone in Maryport is really proud of Simon’s achievement and everyone’s been talking about him. There was a lot of fundraising before he went to Rio and everyone just wants to welcome him home and thank him for putting Maryport on the map.”

Simon will set off from St Mary’s Church at 10.30am and make his way along Curzon Street, Senhouse Street and finish at the town hall.

He was praised at a meeting of Allerdale council on Wednesday night.

“Simon is an example of a really active life,” said Coun McCarron-Holmes.
