The many activities that take place at a Maryport community hub were showcased at the weekend.

On Saturday, those who did not know what happens at Ewanrigg and Netherton Community Centre had the chance to find out when it opened its doors for an open day.

The many organisations that use the centre were there to show what they do.

They included Age UK, which runs computer classes for the elderly, often get providing bacon butties at the same time.

The bank of computers are also free to anyone who wants to use them and are an asset to the job club that runs from the centre.

Chess clubs, Brownies, help agencies, children's cooking sessions, education, exercise classes and a choir can all be found there.

It is headquarters to Ewanrigg and Netherton Tenants' and Residents' Association (Entra), which is the driving force behind many of the activities.

It is also the home of the Ewanrigg Local Trust, set up with £1million of lottery funding to raise health, employment and aspiration in the area.

The two groups work closely and it is from here that the Save Our Beds (SOB) hospital campaign was born and, from that, the Maryport Health Alliance, which is fighting for the health of the community.

Bus trips for families, a three-day annual holiday in Blackpool and a day trip to the illuminations are just a few of the other things that happen from the centre

Entra chairman Bill Barnes said things tended to grow there.

He said: "We started coffee and crack, for instance. It was meant to be a gathering for coffee and a chat on Tuesday. We now serve a two-course dinner and have up to 60 people attending on a regular basis. We also have 50 plus at bingo on a Saturday."

Mr Barnes paid tribute to all the volunteers who help run the centre and, in particular, his wife Sharon, who organises the food, runs the children's cooking and is chairman of the local trust.

"Without these people the centre would be a poorer place," he said.

Of the open day, he said: "We had some people come in who had no idea what we do. Now we will see if they take advantage of what we have."
