Two school workers raised £1,250 by jumping out of a plane to help a Workington girl battling cancer.

Michelle Jones and Chelsea Stephenson, who work at Ellenborough and Ewanrigg Infant School in Maryport, completed a skydive in aid of Emily Shutt who is fighting cancer for the third time.

They raised the cash by jumping out of a plane at Skydive Northwest.

Michelle, of Pinfold Street, overcame her fear of flying to take on the challenge.

She said: "I was fine on the day on the way down but the nerves kicked in when we got there.

"It was an amazing experience and we plan to do another one in the future.

"I think Emily is what pushed me to go through with it, when they opened the hatch I was thinking of her."

Helen Johnson, Emily's mum, added: "We're overwhelmed because every little helps.

"It's nice to actually meet the people who do things for Emily.

"If there's anyone who has fundraising ideas they can get get in touch and we can help."

Emily, of Railbank Drive, was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of two.

The family had begun to relax following a bone marrow transplant from Emily’s eight-year-old brother Alfie in 2014, but she fell ill again earlier last year.

She faces continued treatment to fight the disease.

People across West Cumbria and beyond have rallied around Emily and her family, organising fundraising events.
