A new boot camp will be launched in Workington next week – and those taking part will be put through their paces by soldiers.

Sergeant Ross Murphy, of the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment based at the town's Army Reserve Centre, has organised the free sessions and is urging people to attend.

Those brave enough to take on the challenge will see first-hand the gruelling workout that the regiments' soldiers are put through as they too are coached by the physical training instructors.

But Sgt Murphy stressed that people don't need to be fitness fanatics to attend, as there will be three different levels – beginner, intermediate and advance.

"A lot more people are getting more involved in health and fitness so this is a way for us to get our name around in the community," he said. "We are part of the community and are doing a lot more at the minute.

He added: "Participants wull be challenged, motivated and above all else have serious fun while getting fit."

A lot of people have already came forward for the camp as word spreads through the town, including two football teams who have signed up.

This isn't the first time Sgt Murphy has highlighted the regiment's presence in the community.

Earlier this year he arranged for a group of 20 soldiers to walk 20 miles in full kit to raise money for charity.

The soldiers joined forces with the town's Royal British Legion and walked from their base to Silloth in Combat Effective Fighting Order, which weighs 25kg.

The sessions begin on Tuesday (Augusy 22).

Registration is at 6.30pm and the session begins at 7pm, at the Army Reserve Centre on Harrington Road.
