A Cockermouth pupil has been named the area's Young Speaker of the Year after wowing the judges with a speech about his future job as an MI6 agent.

Zachary Devenish, from Fairfield Primary School, won the annual competition organised by Cockermouth Speakers Club for year six pupils in the town and surrounding villages.

One pupil from each of the schools attended the Hundith Hill event and made a speech, with four subjects to choose from.

A club spokesman said: "The standard of the speakers was very high, giving the judges Peter Hodgson, Pamela Thomas and Graham McLachlan a very difficult task."

Runners up were Joel Brentnall from Bridekirk Dovenby Primary School and Cameron Murray from Broughton Primary School.

Cockermouth mayor and mayoress of Sam and Hilary Standage were at the event.

Councillor Standage presented certificates to all the contestants and trophies and plaques to the winners.
