Youngsters in West Cumbria providing unpaid care for their family and loved ones will be among 20,000 young adult carers to have their lives transformed by a £40,000 funding boost.

West Cumbria Carers has been awarded the money from Carers Trust, the UK’s largest charity for unpaid carers, to help carers aged 14 to 25 make life-changing decisions about their future.

Sue Whitehead, chief officer of West Cumbria Carers, said: "This vital funding will help us to support young carers who are disadvantaged and are struggling to reach their potential because of the demands of their caring role.

"With our support, young adult carers will be able to identify their aspirations, maintain school or college attendance to attain a good level of education, which will positively impact on their life chances as they become adults."

The cash will provide training, residential trips and one-to-one support sessions about education, health, housing and employment.

Project workers will make sure carers understand their rights and get the steer they need to make choices in life – beyond their demanding caring roles.
