People are being encouraged to sign up to take on Striding Edge on Helvellyn at night for charity.

The event, Striding Edge by Torchlight, will take place on Saturday, November 5.

It is being organised by Matt Le Voi and John Brooks, of Lakeland Mountain Guides, who founded the Catbells Festival of Light event which raises money for Community Action Nepal through people climbing Lake District fells.

Matt and John will host the event, which also took place last year, and money raised will go to the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association.

Participants must have a basic level of hill fitness and experience scrambling on Striding Edge or similar grade 1 routes such as Sharp Edge, Halls Fell Ridge, Crib Goch and Tryfan. It is £50 per person to join the event.

John, who is a serving member of the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team, said: "With an ever increasing demand on teams all across the UK, the need for an increase in funding for equipment and training has never been more pertinent."

Matt said: "As with the Catbells event, we like to try and do something which is a little out of the ordinary so heading up Striding Edge at night fits that bill perfectly."

Experienced mountain leaders, many of which are also mountain rescue volunteers, will be on hand to support walkers.
