Talented art students at Cockermouth School are exhibiting their work in shops.

There has been a fantastic response to their creations and it’s hoped more businesses will take part.

Head of art Sam Tinkler said: “We wanted to share the talent of our students and brighten up some shop windows in town.

“The recent exhibition was well received, everyone was asking if we could leave it up for longer.”

Benni Fish, 18, of Dearham, is showing his paintings in the windows of Cockermouth Arts and Crafts, on Main Street.

Owner Susie Farish said: “I have had so many positive comments about the art. People have said what a brilliant budding artist he is.”

Maisie Short, 18, of Cockermouth, is one of five students exhibiting in Strolling for Shoes, on Main Street.

She has an unconditional offer to study textiles at Manchester Metropolitan University in September and was delighted to see her art work in the shop.

Manager Gail Porter said: “We have a fantastic community and are always keen to support it.

“The artwork look great and really brightens up the stairs.”

Other pieces are due to go up in the Quince and Medlar restaurant on Castlegate and White and Green on Station Street.

“I have been working with Gilli Goodfellow from the Kirkgate in a bid to try and get more visual arts into the community for everyone to see,” said Mrs Tinkler.

“We are working with the Chamber of Trade to contact landlords and shop owners. We would like some work to be placed in the empty shops.

“Exhibiting like this gives the students’ great personal satisfaction and pride.”
