Maryport town councillor, Thomas Todd, will make sure the town is blooming this summer.

Thomas, 22, is one of four young councillors who are looking to make their mark.

That is why, when it looked as though Maryport Town Council would not be entering Cumbria in Bloom this year, Thomas decided he would do it.

With the backing of the council and town centre manager Toni Magean he has been working hard to ensure that schools, organisations and neighbourhoods are all prepared to do their bit.

Maryport has been entered into the small coastal town section of In Bloom.

Community involvement is a key part of that. He has spoken to Fleming Square residents and will meet the residents' association next week.

He is also working with Ewanrigg Junior School and with the Ewanrigg Local Trust who are running an open spaces project.

He said: "I don't really know anything about horticulture but the groups and organisations I am working with do."

Thomas was co-opted to the council last year, after being persuaded by another young councillor, Lee Williamson.

He is a Labour councillor representing the Ewanrigg ward, but admitted that politics at local level was of little interest to him.

He said: "I am really interested in national politics but not at this level. I did not join the council for political reasons. Politics at this level is has no challenge. It is too close knit."

Thomas, from North Street, is assistant manager at Coral bookmakers on Senhouse Street.

His father, Sean, is from Maryport. He was in the army and the family moved around the county before returning to Maryport.

When he is not working, Thomas used to enjoy jogging before a knee injury.

He is also drummer in the local band, Homegrown.

Cumbria in Bloom will be judged in July.
