This year’s Tiger Boat Challenge on Derwentwater has been saved, organisers have revealed.

It was thought that the event, on Saturday, September 17, was going to have to be cancelled due to a lack of teams.

But 11 teams have registered for the challenge, allowing it to go ahead.

It is organised by Workington Derwent Rotary and Bassenthwaite Rotary clubs and hosted by Derwentwater Marina.

The clubs have chosen the Times & Star’s Lifeboat Appeal and Cumbria Blood Bikes as the main charities, with teams also raising funds for their own causes.

The event has raised more than £50,000 for charities since it started eight years ago.

Alan Urquhart, of Bassenthwaite Rotary Club, is joint co-ordinator of the event.

He said: “It’s been a mysterious but well-received turnaround. Both Rotary clubs are delighted that we have received sufficient applications to allow the event to go ahead and we are really looking forward to it.”

There is capacity for one more team to take part and organisers are keen to hear from anyone who would like to sign up.

Age UK and Gates Tyres have ent-ered two teams each, and Cockermouth Round Table, West House, Carlisle police, Bendles Solicitors in Carlisle, Kendal pol-ice, Penrith Farmers and Kidds’ Keswick office and Workington’s St Joseph’s School are all taking part.

Each team raises sponsorship to be split between a cause of their choice and the Rotary causes.

Last year, more than 100 people took part and the event was won by Cockermouth Round Table.

Races are sponsored by local businesses and Rotary members provide a barbecue, bar and other refreshments for spectators.
