Time is running out to apply for money to make properties more flood resilient.

Residents and businesses who had flood water enter their building in December 2015 only have until March 31 to apply for the cash from Allerdale council.

Those eligible can get up to £5,000 to help pay for measures which will make their property more resistant to flooding or make it quicker to clean-up and return to the property if it floods.

This can include flood gates, valves and other measures.

Home owners may also be eligible for a further £2,000 from Cumbria Community Foundation.

Neighbours can apply as a group if they want to pay for a resilience scheme which covers a number of properties.

So far Allerdale Council has received over 900 applications and paid out more than £1.6m in grants.

Phil Tibble, executive member with responsibility for emergency planning, said: "Thankfully the weather has been kind to us this winter and we haven't seen a repeat of the flooding in 2015.

"However, it is always best to be prepared as much as possible, so I'd encourage everyone who hasn't applied to do so immediately before the deadline passes. There's also the possibility that something unexpected turns up or a delay in the process, so the quicker people act the better."

To apply for the grant visit www.allerdale.gov.uk/floodadvice and download the application form, ring Allerdale council on 0303 123 1702 or visit one of their contact centres in Workington, Cockermouth, Keswick, Maryport or Wigton.
