Cockermouth is set for its Christmas lights switch-on this weekend.

On Sunday, there will be an afternoon of entertainment on Main Street before mayor Julie Laidlow is joined by local children on the main stage to switch on the town centre lights at 5pm on Sunday.

Thousands of people are expected to head into the town to enjoy all the fun on offer.

There will be Santa's grotto, lots of stalls, fun fair rides and music. Parking will be free during the day in all Allerdale car parks.

Main Street will be closed between Station Street and Sullart Street from 11am to 7pm, with no waiting from 8am.

The fun kicks off with a performance by Cockermouth Music Centre Band at 2pm. Stagecoach Theatre Arts School will be performing from 2.25pm, they will be followed by Martiny's Magic at 2.50pm, Holly Goodger at 3.15pm and Ben Rowlands at 3.30pm.

Cockermouth Mechanics Band and Churches Together Choir will take to the stage at 3.55pm, Mandy's Dancing Divas will be on at 4.20pm.

Churches Together in Cockermouth has lots going on in the United Reformed Church on Main Street.

The Primary Puppets Theatre will be presenting Why Christmas? at 3pm and 4pm. The church will also be running cookery demos and a cafe, providing free refreshments.

Lots of charities will be hosting stalls, including Cockermouth Community Hospital League of Friends, which will be selling mulled cider, with all proceeds going to the hospital.
