Traffic chaos in a West Cumbrian town centre could be eased this weekend.

Maryport has been almost gridlocked at times because of the number of roadworks, especially at the busy Netherhall Corner where Wood Street has been on controlled lights or reverted to one lane for several weeks.

The situation peaked on Monday after the funeral of William Richardson.

The roadworks, right outside St Mary's Church where around 600 people attended the funeral, brought the town centre to a halt.

The latest work began on the day of the funeral

A spokesperson for Electricity North West, said: “Our contractor Gallaghers are working on our behalf to install an underground electricity cable in the Maryport area.

“Engineers started work on Monday and will finish onsite on Sunday.

“We would like to thank local residents and businesses for their patience and support as we carry out this essential work in the area."

Prior to that Connect Roads had traffic controls in place as an upgrade of the Netherhall traffic lights was undertaken.

Mealpot Road is still on traffic control during the continuing construction of the transport hub at the railway station and the creation of new sports fields for Maryport Amateur Rugby League Club.
