Cockermouth residents are being encouraged to turn out tomorrow to support the town's first Daffodil Day.

The event will be opened by Lord and Lady Egremont at 10am at All Saints' Church.

There will be events at the church throughout the day, in celebration of poet William Wordsworth.

They will include displays by schools and groups, talks by the Wordsworth Trust and family activities.

Music will be provided by Cockermouth Harmonics Society, Castlegate Singers, Alte Musik, the recorder group and Cockermouth Mechanics Band.

Refreshments will be provided by the church and Cockermouth Inner Wheel.

A parade will set off from Wordsworth House at noon and workshops were held this week for people to make decorations.

People of all ages can take part in the parade, with Georgian dress or daffodil-inspired costumes encouraged.

Poetry reading competitions will be held at the Kirkgate Centre for primary school children at 11am, secondary school pupils at 12.30pm and seniors at 2pm.

There will be guided walks by the civic trust, and a shop window competition will be judged by Lord and Lady Egremont.

A framed print of Wordsworth's Daffodils poem will be sold in a blind auction.

Cockermouth Rotary Club has taken the lead in organising the event, which it is hoped will bring lots of people into town.

More than 35,000 bulbs were planted throughout the town and along the roads leading in last year.

Organiser Ray Day said: "We want to encourage everyone to come out and support this event.

"It's a great opportunity for the town to get together to have fun and give a boost to local traders following the recent floods."
