The family of a man who died after being stabbed in a Maryport street have described him as a devoted family man who will be sorely missed.

William Richardson, 34, of Elizabeth Terrace, Maryport, was attacked on Senhouse Street in the early hours of Tuesday.

He was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle but died yesterday.

In a statement, Mr Richardson's family said: "Our beautiful boy William has gone but we will meet again one day.

"William - our son, Louise’s brother, dad to Alex, nine, and Lewis, eight, and "Daddy William" to Mayson, six, the son of his beloved girlfriend Amy.

"William was a devoted family man."

Mr Richardson was born on the Isle of Man but moved to Maryport aged five.

He attended Maryport infant and junior schools and Netherhall School.

After leaving school he worked as a qualified bricklayer.

A fan of running and keeping fit, he enjoyed boxing and won several awards in the sport.

His family said: "He also won a Northern Area title belt as a semi-pro.

"William loved us and we will love him until our lives end. Until we meet again, our darling William."

A 32-year-old man, living in Maryport, arrested on suspicion of murder remains in police custody.

Detective Superintendent Vicki Ellis said: “The investigation continues. We have a team of officers investigating, as well as trained officers working closely with Mr Richardson’s family. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of William.

"Detectives are continuing to piece together the events of that evening and will continue to secure evidence. I want to thank both the family of Mr Richardson and the community for their patience during this time.

"Finally, I would urge anyone with any information who has yet to come forward to contact the police immediately."
