A flood victim who met Jeremy Corbyn during his visit to Cockermouth has received a personal video message from him.

Liz Fitton, 65, was flooded out of her Waterloo Street home in December.

When the Labour leader visited the town after the floods he met Mrs Fitton and sang Happy Birthday to her as she was celebrating that day.

During the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, Seaton councillor Celia Tibble asked Mr Corbyn to record the message.

The message says: "Hi Liz, it was wonderful meeting you in Cockermouth last year when we were paddling through the water trying to help people in the floods and I remember you walking down the street.

"I said to you 'what's going on?' and you said it was your birthday and we sang Happy Birthday and it was great, it cheered people up."

Mrs Fitton, a founder member of Cockermouth Amateur Dramatic Society, has now moved to Dearham and put her Cockermouth house up for sale.

She said: "I was in complete and utter shock when I saw the video, I was very emotional.

"The only time I met him was in Cockermouth after the floods. I knew he was in town and I went out to try and find him, I didn't think he would sing me Happy Birthday.

"I think he's an honest man, he's authentic.

"I believe what he says, he's not your traditional member of parliament.

"That video made me so happy, it was amazing.

"I just want to point out that this is a private video he did for me and I'm happy for people to see, but he didn't do it for the publicity."

Coun Tibble used to work with Mrs Fitton in community mental health services.

She said: "I have worked with Liz for many years and I knew how special it was for her when Jeremy sang to her.

"I was at the conference and he came to a reception I was attending, I thought it would be worth asking him.

"He remembered her and was very pleased to send her a message.

"Liz has spent all her working life supporting people, it was a pleasure to get this for her."

Mrs Fitton has been diagnosed with cancer.

She said: "My last wish would be to meet Jeremy Corbyn again "I'd like him to invite me out for tea in Cockermouth."
