Dragons, knights and princesses swept through Harrington as two schools celebrated St George's Day.

Hundreds of people lined Church Road to watch staff and pupils from Beckstone Primary School and Workington Academy parade up and down the street.

Behind a large effigy of a dragon - designed and decorated with glittery scales by the youngsters - flags were waved and drums were beaten to the delight of the crowd.

Lillian Baldry, of Salterbeck, and Julia Powley, of Harrington, were among those who turned out.

Lillian said: "It's always good to see schools working together.

"It's nice to have something for people to come out on the streets for.

"They've got such a nice day for it as well."

Julia added: "The dragon was fantastic. It's great to have the youngsters getting involved with the community.

"It's lovely that it's all ages too, from the little ones to the older children."

Albert Moffat, of Seaton, waved a flag as it passed and said it was like nothing he'd seen before.

He added: "It was great, just lovely to see.

"They don't teach things like that in most schools."

Each year group carried the flag of a country which St George is the patron saint of.

Workington Academy's band led the music while the 11th Workington Scout Group also joined in the parade.

The parade was followed by a concert on the school field.

David Warbrick, headteacher, said: "What a spectacle it's been, and in such lovely weather.

"Everybody came out to support us so it's been a real community event.

"It's wonderful to see young people getting that recognition.

"A lot of thanks have to go to the parents because they sorted the children's costumes."
